Although its appearance is as inconspicuous as a good civil servant, the Toyota Prius enjoys a special position: It is the uncrowned king of hybrid vehicles—and an example (or all the others who rely on the power of two hearts. The Prius already came onto the market in 1997 in its first generation and was also offered outside of Japan starting in 2000. Although the competition didn’t take it seriously for a long time, the Prius set a trend. And it created the basis for its sales success: Toyota now offers the hybrid technology in several production series and has sold more than one million hybrid cars during the past ten years. According to its own statements, Toyota has reduced the C02 emissions by 3.5 million tons as a result. Since 2003. the second generation of Prius has been on the market with a body shape that has a distinctly more pleasing and modern look in comparison to its predecessor. With its electric motor, the sedan can be driven in the city with electric drive. Energy is recovered during braking and coasting. Toyota is now working on a plug-in variation of the Prius, which can be charged at an outlet. When driven just electrically, this version reaches a top speed of 60 mph and has a range 8 miles.

Denn in seiner ersten Generation kam der Prius bereits 1997 auf den Markt und wurde ab 2000 auch auBerhalb Japans angeboten. Von der Konkurrenz lange nicht ernst genommen, hat der Prius einen Trend gesetzt. Und die Basis fur einen Verkaufserfolg gelegt: Toyota bietet die Hybridtechnik inzwischen in mehreren Baureihen an und hat in den vergangenen zehn Jahren mehr als eine Million Hybrid-Autos verkauft. Nach eigenen Angaben hat Toyota dadurch den CGyAusstoB um 3,5 Millionen Tonnen reduziert. Seit 2003 ist die zweite Generation des Prius auf dem Markt, deren Karosserieformen im Vergleich zum Vorganger deutlich gefalliger und moderner wirken. Mit ihrem Elektromo-tor vermag die Limousine in der Stadt mit Elektroantrieb zu fahren. Beim Bremsen und im Schiebebetrieb wird Energie zuruckgewonnen. Toyota arbeitet zwischenzeitlich an einer Plug-in-Variante des Prius, die an der Steckdose aufgeladen werden kann. Rein elektrisch bewegt, erreicht diese Version eine Spitzengeschwindigkeit von 100 km/h und schafft eine Strecke von rund 13 Kilometern.
