With a total length of just 8.85 feet, the Smart Fortwo is one of the smallest vehicles available. The two-seater now wants to score points with regard to environmental protection by using various technologies. The Smart with a complete electric drive is being tested in the trial period while a version with the start-stop system is already on the market as a micro hybrid. Within the scope of a pilot project in Great Britain, about 100 Smart Fortwo ed (electric drive) were offered to selected customers as leasing vehicles. This model is driven by a 41 -HP electric motor. The energy costs are reportedly just one-third of the conventional gasoline drive. There is an additional advantage of the electric drive especially for British customers: The Smart Fortwo ed is exempt from the city toll in London. The Smart Fortwo mhd (micro hybrid drive) has already gone into series production. The gasoline engine is linked with a start-stop function here. When braking, the engine turns off at a speed of 5 mph. As soon as the driver removes the foot from the brake pedal, the engine starts again automatically. This reportedly reduces the fuel consumption by eight percent; in city traffic, Smart believes that a reduction of 19 percent is even possible.

In einer Testphase wird der Smart mit reinem Elektroantrieb erprobt, wahrend eine Version mit Start/Stopp-System als Micro-Hybrid schon auf dem Markt ist. Im Rahmen eines Pilotprojekts in GroBbritannien wurden rund 100 Smart Fortwo ed (electric drive) ausgewahlten Kunden als Leasingfahr-zeuge angeboten. Dieses Modell wird von einem 41 PS starken Elektro-motor angetrieben. Dadurch sollen die Energiekosten nur ein Drittel der Kosten bei konventionellem Benzinantrieb betragen. Ein weiterer Vorteil des Elektroantriebs speziell fur die britischen Kunden: Der Smart Fortwo ed ist in London von der City-Maut befreit. Bereits in Serie ist der Smart Fortwo mhd (micro hybrid drive) erhaltlich. Hier ist der Benzinmotor mit einer Start/Stopp-Funktion gekoppelt. Beim Bremsen schaltet der Motor bei einer Geschwindigkeit von 8 km/h ab. Sobald der Fahrer den Ful3 vom Bremspedal nimmt, startet der Motor automatisch wieder. Dadurch soil der Kraftstoffverbrauch durchschnittlich um acht Prozent reduziert wer-den, im Stadtverkehr halt Smart sogar eine Reduzierung um 19 Prozent fur moglich.
