Natural-gas drive represents one possibility of noticeably reducing C02 emissions without extensive technical efforts. In comparison to conventional gasoline propulsion, natural gas produces about 20 percent less carbon dioxide. Since 2004, Mercedes-Benz has offered the E-Class as E 200 NGT (Natural Gas Technology) in series production. The natural-gas drive is not only kind to the environment, but also to the wallet. Because natural gas is available for considerably less than gasoline, the operating costs are reduced—and this is especially attractive for people who are on the road a lot. The 163 HP four-cylinder engine of the E 200 NGT has a bivalent drive system, which means that it can also use con-ventional gasoline. Once the supply in the gas tank is exhausted, the E-Class continues to drive with super unleaded gasoline. This also increases the maximum distance to about 621 miles. Drivers can decide which propulsion energy to use: With the help of the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel and the central display in the combi instrument, they can switch between natural gas and gasoline. A special electronic control unit provides a gentle, smooth transfer and individually controls the process for each cylinder.

Der Erdgasantrieb schont nicht nur die Umwelt, sondern auch den Geldbeutel. Weil Erdgas erheblich giinstiger als Benzin angeboten wird, reduzieren sich die Betriebskosten – das ist besonders fur Vielfahrer attraktiv. Der 163 PS starke Vierzylindermotor des E 200 NGT ist bivalent ausgelegt, er kann also auch mit konventionellem Benzin fahren. Ist der Vorrat der Gas-tanks erschopft, fahrt die E-Klasse mit bleifreiem Superbenzin weiter. Nebenbei erhoht sich so die maximale Reichweite auf rund 1000 Kilometer. Der Autofahrer entscheidet selbst, welche Antriebsenergie zum Einsatz kommen soli: Mit Hilfe der Tasten im Multifunktionslenkrad und des Zentral-Displays im Kombi-lnstrument kann er zwischen Erdgas und Benzin umschalten. Eine spezielle elektronische Steuerung sorgt fur einen sanflen, ruckfreien Wechsel und steuert die Umschaltung fur jeden Zylinder einzeln.
