Mercedes-Benz has long researched the development of the fuel cell: In 1994, the company introduced the first fuel-cell vehicle in the world. Although the innovative technology had to originally be housed in a transporter, they succeeded in placing the fuel cell next to all of the aggregates in an A-Class in 2002. Extensive driver tests with this model are allowing the date for series production to get closer. In 2010, Mercedes wants to put the larger B-Class on the market in a small series with an emission-free fuel-cell drive. The reaction of hydrogen and oxygen results only in steam, which escapes through the exhaust pipe into the atmosphere. Mercedes-Benz presented the current and optimized fuel-cell system in 2005 in the research vehicle F 600 Hygenius. This very compact fuel cell works considerably more efficiently than the previous generations. The newly designed stack is about 40 percent smaller and develops 30 percent more power with 16 percent less consumption. The electric motor built for the B-Class develops 136 HP and a maximum torque of 320 newton-meters. This means that the B-Class F-Cell enables performances that are above the level of a two-liter gasoline-driven car.
