The legendary Airstream caravan has a cull status, and not just among fans of design. The silvery shining mobiles also provided the name for an innovative concept car that Ford presented at the Detroit Motor Show in 2007. It is intended to offer a stylistic outlook of the future in the crossover segment. Ford calls the study a Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV). Its creators also allowed themselves to be inspired by space travel in its design. While the driver enters on the left side of the vehicle through a normal door, the right side has a large clamshell door that opens upward. The interior also has a futuristic design. The driver and passenger sit on swiveling bucket seats; the passenger area has a lounge atmosphere. The drive for the study developed jointly by Ford and Airstream is a fuel cell. According to statements by Ford, the hydrogen unit is only about half as heavy as customary units and is convincing because of the almost unlimited suitability for everyday use with half the costs. For example, the fuel cell of the Ford Airstream Concept also operates at temperatures below freezing without any restrictions. The Airstream drives about 24 miles with battery power. If the battery charge runs out. the fuel cell delivers new energy for the distance of another 280 miles.

Als Antrieb dient der von Ford und Airstream gemeinsam entwickelten Studie eine Brennstoffzelle. Das Wasserstoff-Aggregat ist nach Ford-Angaben nur rund halb so schwer wie gewohnliche Einheiten und uberzeugt bei der Halfte der Kosten mit nahezu uneingeschrankter Alltagstauglichkeit. So funktioniert die Brennstoffzelle des Ford Airstream Concept beispielsweise auch bei Temperaturen unterhalb des Gefrier-punkts ohne Einschrankungen. Mit Batteriekraft fahrt der Airstream etwa 40 Kilometer weit. Geht die Akkuladung zur Neige, liefert die Brennstoffzelle neue Energie fur weitere 450 Kilometer Fahrstrecke.
